Four of the seven rows on this panel are arginine or citrulline. Once you notice that, the formula stops looking like a list and starts looking like an argument.

The argument runs: your blood vessels are lined with a single layer of cells that decide, minute by minute, how wide the vessel should be. They signal that decision with nitric oxide, a gas with a life measured in seconds. They build nitric oxide out of arginine. Therefore a formula that wants to support circulation buys arginine, and buys it twice.

Nothing here is a claim about what the product will do for you. It is a description of what the ingredients are and what they are known to be involved in.

The capsule opens

Hypromellose is a plant cellulose. It holds the powder together on the shelf and gives way in the stomach, which is why this is a vegetable capsule rather than gelatine.

Two amino acids go into the blood

Arginine and citrulline are absorbed from the small intestine like the amino acids in any protein meal, and travel in the bloodstream.

Citrulline is turned into arginine

The kidney does this conversion. It is the reason a formula aimed at nitric oxide carries citrulline as well as arginine rather than simply doubling one.

Nitric oxide is made in the vessel wall

The cells lining your blood vessels use arginine to make nitric oxide, a short-lived gas that signals the surrounding muscle to relax.

Vessels widen a little

A relaxed vessel is a wider vessel, and a wider vessel carries more blood at the same pressure. This is the mechanism the whole formula is built around.

Niacin joins the same conversation

Vitamin B3 is part of how every cell releases energy from food, and a capsule of this supplement carries nearly half a day's worth.

Beta alanine goes somewhere else entirely

It is the limiting building block for carnosine, which your body stores mainly in muscle. At forty milligrams this is the smallest entry on the panel and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Calcium does a quieter job

Eighteen milligrams is one and a half per cent of a day. In a capsule this size calcium carbonate is usually there as much for the physics of filling as for the mineral itself.

Two doors into the same room

Why two forms of each

If you only wanted arginine in the blood, the obvious move is to put more arginine in the capsule. Makers do not do that, and the reason is a piece of plumbing called first-pass metabolism.

Swallowed arginine meets an enzyme called arginase in the gut wall and again in the liver, and a good share of it never reaches general circulation. Citrulline is not a substrate for that enzyme. It passes through, reaches the kidney, and is converted there. Two doors into the same room.

The salts are a second layer of the same thinking. Arginine AKG and citrulline malate behave differently from the plain amino acids in dissolution and absorption, and splitting the dose across forms is a hedge rather than a gimmick.

What this page is not saying

It is not saying this capsule treats anything. Nitric oxide biology is real and well described in physiology textbooks; whether 400 mg of arginine and 200 mg of citrulline once a day moves any number you care about in your own body is a separate question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the body and the number.

What the label lets us say is what is in the capsule and what those substances are involved in. That is the boundary of this page, and we have tried not to cross it.

On the mechanism

Why buy citrulline if arginine is the thing you want?

Because a good deal of swallowed arginine is broken down in the gut and the liver before it reaches general circulation, while citrulline slips past both and is turned into arginine by the kidney. Carrying both is a way of approaching the same endpoint along two roads.

What does AKG add?

Alpha-ketoglutarate is a molecule from the citric acid cycle, the process every cell uses to release energy. Bound two to one with arginine it makes a salt that behaves differently in the gut from arginine on its own. On this label it is a second 200 mg on its own line.

Is 640 mg of amino acids a lot?

Measured against a meal, no: a chicken breast carries several grams of arginine alone. Measured against other once-daily capsules on the shelf it is a normal figure. What is unusual here is that you can see the split rather than being told a blend total.

Will I feel anything?

There is no stimulant in the bottle, so there is no jolt to feel. Anyone telling you a capsule of amino acids produces a noticeable event within the hour is selling you something. Judge it across weeks, which is the reason the seller gives you sixty days.

Does the order of the panel mean anything?

Yes. Nutrients with an established daily value are listed first by convention, which is why niacin and calcium sit at the top despite being the two smallest figures by weight.
